Success Strategy #3
Get More Assignments

When you do a good job, companies will happily offer you more work if they can. The mystery shopping companies I surveyed when writing ’The Mystery Shopper’s Manual,’ all said that they have shoppers they employ as often as possible because they are dependable and do excellent work. There are also shoppers they would love to give more assignments to, but they simply don’t have enough clients in the shopper’s area to do so. And, of course, there are shoppers they won’t work with again because they didn’t do the job they were given.

Even though some companies may not be able to work with you as much as you and they would like, you will probably find that there are a least a couple of companies that have a large number of shops available in your area. Doing your best work will keep them sending you all the assignments they can.

The three most important things to remember about doing a mystery shop are:

Do it on time.
Do it completely.
Do it accurately.

A fourth and the most important thing: do it. If you accept, but do not complete an assignment, it is likely that you will not receive another assignment from that company. If an emergency comes up that keeps you from completing your assignment, or keeps you from getting your report in on time, call the company immediately to let them know.

Dos and Don’ts
Following these suggestions will keep you in good graces with mystery shopping companies and schedulers, and will help you go to the front of the line for more and better assignments.

Do communicate with the mystery shopping companies you work with and let them know about anything that will affect getting your reports done on time.

Don’t call them just to chat. They don’t have time.

Do drop them an email to let them know if there has been a change in your contact information or availability.

Don’t badger them about when they will have a job for you, or why they don’t give you more assignments. That’s a sure way to get no assignments in the future!

Do complete your assignments as soon as possible during the shopping period.

Don’t ask for extra time to complete your assignments, month after month.

Do respond promptly when a mystery shopping company contacts you with an assignment or a question.

Don’t let phone messages and email pile up.

Do be willing to take on a last minute assignment, or go a little out of your way to do a shop when the mystery shopping company is in a crunch.

Don’t cause a crunch by canceling at the last minute or failing to do a shop you accepted.

Do turn in complete reports and any receipts or other required documentation.

Don’t submit incomplete information that causes the company to have to call you.

And always remember to be polite and considerate. The people at mystery shopping companies are just that—people. They have good days and bad days, and they have to deal with stress, just like you. Be courteous and cooperative when you work with them and help make their jobs a little easier. They will remember you as a shopper with whom they enjoy working.
