Know What Makes a Great Mystery Shopper
What makes a great mystery shopper? I had conversations with mystery shopping company owners and schedulers where they told me that only about 10% of their shoppers could be considered excellent mystery shoppers. Ten percent.
In my conversations with those who hire mystery shoppers, the same issues kept coming up. Most companies are looking for the same things. The characteristics that make you valuable to one company will make you valuable to many.
So what are those characteristics? They don’t have to do with your age, or whether you are male or female. They don’t even directly relate to your education or work experience (although educational accomplishments and experience in a service industry are helpful).
Mystery shopping companies want shoppers who are:
* Reliable
* Observant
* Organized
* Objective
* Flexible
* Honest
* Thorough
* Good Writers
The most important is to be reliable. Mystery shopping is a business, and the companies you shop for are depending on you. Too often, mystery shoppers don’t do their shops or do a poor job. That leaves the mystery shopping company scrambling to get the assignment properly completed in very little time.
In addition to these characteristics, most companies require that you have access to the Internet, and that you complete your reports in Word, Excel or on the web. It is helpful to have a fax machine or scanner for submitting receipts (although not usually required). Specific assignments may require that you have equipment such as a voice recorder or digital camera.
As you can see, the most important qualifications for mystery shopping are completely within your control. By choosing to be reliable, honest, objective, etc., you can become successful as a mystery shopper.
