Put the Excitement Back in Your Business

Remember when you first started your business? You were excited and enthusiastic, and couldn’t wait to tell everyone you met about what you were doing.

Does it all seem a little stale to you now, or are you a little bored by some of the marketing and administrative tasks you have to do?

That boredom can show, and can affect how you and your business appear to potential customers. So what can you do to get the excitement back?

Here are a few tips to keep things fresh:

Remember that you are always reaching new people, so you and your business are new to them. They haven’t heard all of this before, even though you’ve said or written it a thousand times.  I teach a class that has been listed in the same catalog since 1995. I’m always getting students who never noticed it before. It’s new to them.

Change it around. I keep that class fresh by making small changes in the information and how it is presented. The meat of the class is the same, it’s the “side dishes” that change.

Give it a new look. I had my IdeaLady.com site completely redesigned last year to give it a more current look and feel. Do you need a new business card, logo, web site, product package or other visual element for your business?

Try a fresh angle. Is there a selling point you haven’t focused on before? Don’t abandon your primary message, but add a new selling point. What has changed in your customers’ lives, and how does your business help them with their new situation?

Go after a new market. Is there a group of people you’re not reaching who need what you sell? Reach out to them with new marketing materials and activities.

Try a new marketing method. Do something you’ve never done before: book a radio interview, send a press release, teach a class, offer a free seminar, exhibit at a trade show or other event, start a blog, etc.

The bad news is that you are never done marketing. The good news is that there is always something new and interesting to do. What will you do to keep things new for you?
